New Not-For-Profit Cafe, Staffed by Mixed-Ability Trainees, Launches in Poole Nursing Home

The Crumbs Project charity, with funding from Luxurycare Group and Lloyds Bank Foundation, is set to open a brand-new café in the grounds of Birds Hill Nursing Home on Monday 11th March with an official public opening taking place between 10am and 2pm.

Aside from offering tasty treats and drinks, the café focuses on helping their mixed-ability trainees achieve life skills and professional development, with all profits being invested back in to the charity.

Colin’s Nest is named after a past resident at the Birds Hill Nursing Home. The café compliments Crumbs’ training centre in Bournemouth, which provides a range of catering services.

Crumbs, who will be running Colin’s Nest day-to-day operations, offer work experience opportunities to adults with learning disabilities, mental health conditions, stroke victims, brain injury sufferers, and people with stabilised addictions. The charity specialises in teaching trainees’ practical skills in catering, hospitality, administration and housekeeping. Colin’s Nest will provide a place for Crumbs trainees to put their skills into practice and gain valuable work experience.

Colin’s Nest will be open for all from the 11th March onwards, with thanks to Luxurycare Group which fully funded the refurbishment of the café which took 5 months to complete. Luxurycare Group provided tables, chairs and all the furnishings and equipment needed for Colin’s Nest to get started.

Luxurycare Group Founder, Kevin Gunputh, said: “I am so pleased to see the launch of Colin’s Nest at our Birds Hill nursing home. As well as providing the facilities for such a fantastic cause, it gives our residents an opportunity to spend time in the café. Colin’s Nest is named after a well-loved resident of Birds Hill, Colin Dilley. The café is a fitting tribute to him.”

Lloyds Bank Foundation also awarded Crumbs a grant of £74,950 to enable the charity to employ a full-time Work Experience Supervisor over the next three years. The new role will facilitate the everyday running of Colin’s Nest community café and support Crumbs’ work steps initiative. Crumb’s Work Experience Supervisor will provide vital support for trainees seeking to find paid or voluntary work placements after their training has completed.

Ursula Boardman, Training Services Manager of Crumbs, said: “Thanks to the financial backing of Luxurycare Group and Lloyds Bank Foundation, Crumbs are able to carry on helping our trainees develop their life skills. The café looks amazing and will be a great place to visit for some lunch and a cup of coffee.”

Colin’s Nest is located at 25 Birds Hill Road, Poole, Dorset, BH15 2GJ and opens between 10am – 2pm, serving light lunches, cakes, teas, coffees, paninis and more.
