Charity run community café in Poole, Colin’s Nest is having a positive impact on the lives of adults with special life challenges, helping them to gain valuable work experience in the hospitality sector.
Colin’s Nest Coffee Shop on Birds Hill is run by local charity The Crumbs Project, which provides vocational training for adults with learning disabilities, mental health issues, stabilised addictions and brain injuries. The coffee shop funded by Luxury Care and Lloyds Community Foundation aims to offer Crumbs trainees an opportunity to put their culinary skills into practice within a supportive environment. The initiative compliments the charity’s Work Steps program, which supports trainees into either paid or voluntary work placements- helping them to achieve a life of independence.
Crumbs trainee Raymond has been attending work experience at Colin’s Nest since the coffee shop first opened in March. Raymond originally joined the Project as part of his recovery from mental illness and to learn to live independently. Through Crumbs’ Worksteps initiative, Raymond is growing in confidence and gaining valuable customer service experience, which is complimenting his ongoing catering training at The Crumbs Project.
Commenting on his experience, Raymond said; “The Crumbs Project have helped me to learn lots of new things. I enjoy working at Colin’s Nest and serving all our new customers. I am still learning lots of new things every day and hope that this experience will help me get a paid job in the future.”
Commenting on the impact the community cafe is having on Crumbs trainees, Training Manager, Ursula Boardman said; “Colin’s Nest is a perfect steppingstone for trainees who are coming to the end of their learning but are still not quite ready to seek alternative employment. Here they can gain a variety of experiences, including; serving the public, handling money and preparing food, whilst still within a supportive environment. For trainees like Raymond, this is having a positive impact in preparing him for the world of work.”
“Raymond has always been a very diligent student, overcoming many challenges to become the confident, hard-working young man he is today. Since he’s started working at Colin’s Nest, he has excelled himself- learning a variety of skills and taking on new responsibilities with a conscientious attitude. With the continued support of the Crumbs team and the experience of working at Colin’s Nest, Raymond will be an asset to any catering establishment and will soon be ready to progress to a paid work placement.”
