Trainees, staff members, and Chair of The CRUMBS Project relish the late summer sunshine at the annual Hospitality & Catering News Charity Golf Day.
Sponsored by Meiko UK and hosted at the internationally renowned The Belfry Hotel & Resort near Birmingham, the Hospitality & Catering News Charity Golf Day has become a popular event in the summer calendar in support of notable charities working within the Hospitality industry.
This year, The CRUMBS Project and Zest Quest Asia were this event’s charity beneficiaries. The CRUMBS Project trainees Ella, William and Dennis spent the day at the event along with Lee Whalley – Head of Operations, Janet Miller – Digital Skills Trainer, and Chair of The CRUMBS Project, Professor Peter A. Jones MBE.
Home to three professional standard award winning golf courses, The Belfry Hotel & Resort provided a great challenge for golf novices and those more experienced in the game. The CRUMBS Project trainees met golfers participating in the event from across the Hospitality industry at The Belfry’s halfway house and handed out goodies bags.
The goodie bags contained sweet treats including chocolate brownies, shortbread and the now famous ‘The CRUMBS Project gingerbread people’, prepared by the trainees in the kitchens of the charity’s training centre in Bournemouth. Each bag included a personal message from a trainee thanking the golf players and donors for supporting The CRUMBS Project’s mission to provide training and support to encourage disadvantaged adults into employment in the Hospitality industry.
With sponsorship from TWO Services, trainees and staff team members were able to enjoy driving golf buggies around The Belfry resort. Peter, Chair of The CRUMBS Project experienced a thrilling golf ride in a buggy driven by trainee Dennis!
During the day, the trainees were given a tour of The Belfry Hotel & Resort, experiencing both front and back of house areas of the UK industry leading resort. The trainees were also coached in front of house presentation standards and received tips from The Belfry Hotel team member Erin who explained carefully how to set the tables, demonstrating how to place every item in its proper position.
After the day of golf, the now tired participants and The CRUMBS Project members were treated to a fabulous three course Al La Carte meal in The Sutton Suite prepared by The Belfry Hotel & Resort’s restaurant team. This included warm smoked salmon & ricotta tart, supreme of chicken with a truffle jus and baked salted caramel cheesecake.
Paul Anderson, MD of the event sponsors Meiko UK, presented framed certificates to all golf team captains to acknowledge participation in the day before the main awards were announced.
The Longest Drive was won by Richard Metcalfe, CEO, Edgbaston Park Hotel and Conference Centre.
Nearest the Pin was won by Oliver Smith, National Sales Director, TWO Services.
The Winning Team Award, for the second year in a row, was won by TWO Services.
Also during the event, Denis Sheehan from Hospitality & Catering News presented Trainee Dennis with a new apron from the Kitchen Porter’s club, the first of a new design to be shared with the club’s members.
Trainee William said: “The meal was delicious! I’d like to try and make these dishes at Crumbs.”
Trainee Ella said: “I enjoyed meeting new people and seeing how the hotel works.”
Trainee Dennis said: “It was really fun to drive Peter around in the golf buggy!.”
Lee Whalley, Head of Operations said:
“This Hospitality event was a fabulous opportunity for trainees to feel included and to experience something very different. Watching the trainees interact and engage with the golfers and team members from The Belfry and Hospitality & Catering News in another environment was so rewarding, as I could see their confidence and pride growing.”
