George’s Journey

George joined The Crumbs Project in July 2016 as a trainee Food Assistant.

George was diagnosed with a mild learning disability which affected his confidence and caused anxiety, this was further complicated by Dyspraxia.  He was very quiet and reserved when he first started at Crumbs but it was evident over the following months that he had a natural ability for cooking.

After several sessions at Crumbs the team identified George has a keen interest in cooking. His organized and self-motivated approach ensured he excelled in his training, completing his Level 2 Food Safety and Hygiene for Catering in February 2017 and was enrolled on a NVQ Level 2 Food Production and Cooking shortly after.

Development plan reviews by his key worker showed how well George was progressing, which increased his confidence. In July 2017 George was put onto the Worksteps Programme – Crumbs’ own dedicated service to support and move trainees into employment. In September 2017 a work experience placement was sourced at Drumconnor in Westbourne where the chef took George under his wing and supported him to increase his skills and further build his confidence. George loved it, and thrived in his placement, applying his skills and taking on more demanding tasks within the kitchen.

At the end of the work placement George was keen to pursue paid employment within a similar role. The Crumbs team supported George throughout the process; helping him to create a CV, completing job applications and preparing him for interviews.

After several weeks of job searching George was offered the role as Catering Assistant at John Lewis’ Café in Branksome, where he is now successfully employed. George is still continuing with his education, aiming to complete his NVQ Level 3 qualification with Crumbs alongside his current employment.

It’s amazing to see the difference in George and how far he has come since he first enrolled at Crumbs. His proactive attitude and conscientious approach to his learning has enabled him to thrive throughout his training. His ambition and exceptional work ethic makes him a valued member of our team and an inspiration to his peers.Karen Tucker, Job Coach

I’ve really enjoyed my time here at Crumbs and very thankful for the help they have given me. I am looking forward to finishing my NVQ Level 3 and continuing my job at John Lewis.  Although I still have some bad days I know that tomorrow is another day and am looking forward to the future.George
