Andrew was diagnosed in his mid-twenties with Asperger’s Syndrome. Andrew has difficulties with communication, increased anxiety, and some mental health issues.
Andrew joined our Administration training department at Crumbs in August 2015. Andrew came with basic IT skills, which he was eager to improve on. He enjoyed all the aspects of his IT training, but was keen to challenge himself on tasks that he found difficult such as using the phone to receive and make calls. Andrew’s IT skills improved, using Microsoft Excel and Word as well as Open Office and sending emails.
Andrew soon gained confidence in using the phone, he would place stationary orders and transfer calls to managers independently. Andrew also gained confidence in speaking to visitors and delivery drivers in our reception. This led Andrew to seek volunteer work with Dorset MIND as an Admin Superstar 18 months into his training with us.
On completing his 2-year training in 2017 with us, Andrew continued his voluntary post with MIND. He said that he felt that he was given something back to society and now wanted to work in Administration for other charities.
Andrew was extremely quiet when he started Crumbs, it was great to watch his skills and confidence grow. It always made my day, to see him smile! When Andrew had learnt something new, he would tell me he had had a good day and was always thankful for any support given to him. Completing a new task or overcoming a barrier always boosted his self-confidence. Ursula – Training & Development Manager
